Dance & Movement Classes for people living with Additional Support Needs

SkyeDance was proud to run a weekly inclusive Dance Class which worked with young people aged between 7-19 and provided them with a safe space to explore creative movements and dance styles. SkyeDance delivered annually an ‘Inclusive Dance Festival’ which joined together groups from across Skye and Lochlash including Kyleakin Connections, Tigh na Drochaid and SkyeDance inclusive groups. The festival proved to be a huge success in the past with each group dancing together and then performing a short routine they had been working on during the weekly classes. The festival would then be finished off with an offering of homemade cakes and hot drinks. Unfortunately due to COVID19 this class has ceased for now. SkyeDance are looking to bring this back to life in the future as it created a wonderful atmosphere for all involved.

Dance Across the Generations

Dance Across the Generations is an inter-generational project that works with groups of primary children and takes them into senior community groups or care/nursing homes to dance together. The project aims to help stave loneliness in the older generation, which is a huge problem on the Isle of Skye with it being such a rural location.

The two groups meet weekly over a six week period and dance together in a range of styles and finish their meetings off with a cuppa and a biscuit to encourage the two groups to socialise together. The project has been a massive success and has worked with schools and homes/community groups across the island.

Dancing through the Islands

At SkyeDance we feel very passionate about creating a sense of community through our classes and projects which is why in March 2020 we began networking with different rural islands surrounding Skye. Due to lockdown we offered all of our classes online and taught young people from islands such as Eigg, Muck and Barra, both separately in their own classes and mixed in with our SkyeDance students classes. We now provide weekly dance sessions online to the islands of Eigg and Muck with the hope to visit sometime next year when the government guidelines allow us to.

Minginish Outreach Project

Minginish Outreach Project allows children from out with Portree to be involved in dance. The project started in August 2021 as an after-school dance class for children in the surrounding area. It grew quickly and there are now two classes taking place every Monday evening in the Minginish Community Hall. It is a helpful stepping stone for the children in more secluded parts of the Island to be involved with SkyeDance. We now have children going into High School who will join our Senior Dance Classes in Portree. The project has been a great success and we hope to keep it going as long as possible.
