Working within the local community
Getting to help out in the community and be involved with local events are always exciting opportunities for us. SkyeDance were selected as a chosen charity by Co-op Community Funding in late 2022 and have also helped out at events organised by Light up Portree and Skye Events. We also run our own events, including our annual showcase where we invite local dance groups to perform alongside our dance groups, it’s always a fun, positive atmosphere!
Inter-generational Project
Our Dance Officers deliver weekly taster classes at primary schools around the island every term. This gives school pupils to try out our classes, get creative and stay active without the worry of travel and costs. As well as providing this opportunity to school pupils, we invite them to visit local nursing/care homes and connect with the older generation by performing a routine they’ve worked on over the term or showcase any talents they wish to show. The purpose of this project is to prevent the feeling of loneliness in the older generation, especially with the Isle of Skye being in such a rural location.
Outreach Dance Project
SkyeDance have a dance studio located in Portree Primary School where our classes are mainly held. Alongside teaching at primary schools during school hours, we also offer outreach afterschool classes for kids living outside the Portree area. In 2021-2022, our classes were held in Minginish and 2023-2024 in Edinbane.
