SkyeDance was first established in 2003 to meet the need for more dance classes and the promotion of Dance across Skye and Lochalsh. The first SkyeDance showcase was performed in June 2004 and was a sell out hit, confirming the appetite and passion for dance on the island.

The creation of a new constituted committee and appointment of a Dance Development Officer in 2006 found SkyeDance really taking off and expanding, with regular classes in Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary as well as invited guest tutors providing workshops in Hip-Hop, Street, Bollywood and Salsa to a wide range of ages.

SkyeDance prides itself on providing inclusive classes which are open to all young people living on the island. In 2018 we started running our Boys Only class which was aimed at boys aged between 6-14 years old. The class grew in popularity as word spread, and soon we had a full class of boys participating in a weekly dance class. We now have 16 boys who attend the class where they learn different styles of dance including Hip Hop, contemporary and creative. Their enthusiasm and motivation shines through and everyone who watches them dance leaves with a massive smile on their face. It is fantastic to have so many boys participating in dance in such a rural part of Scotland and we hope to be able to continue to grow and showcase their talent nationwide.

We also lead projects in inter-generational work where primary children visit nursing/care homes and dance with the residents. The benefits of this physically and mentally, especially for people living with dementia is extraordinary and a great highlight of the week for everyone involved.

Alongside our inter-generational project we also run a weekly class aimed at young people living with different disabilities and deliver workshops across the island to disability groups. In December 2019 we held our first ‘Inclusive Dance Festival’ where young people and adults from across Skye and Lochalsh came together for an afternoon of dancing and socialising. We cannot wait for our next one!

We currently employ one member of staff, Ailsa McInnes, who is our full time Dance Officer and in charge of delivering all of our dance and movement classes and projects, and dealing with the day to day running of the Charity.

The Annual SkyeDance Showcase continues to highlight the diversity and quality of instruction available, bringing together dancers from the regular SkyeDance classes as well as providing a platform for all dancers and teachers of dance in the area. It has become a highlight for both the dancers and the wider public.

Today, SkyeDance continues to provide high quality dance classes across a range disciplines: Ballet, Contemporary, Body Conditioning, Hip Hop, and Creative Dance classes (see timetable).

We were recently delighted to have been awarded funding from The Robertsons Trust and Youth Scotland to enable us to continue the excellent work SkyeDance brings to its community.

To enable us to continue our ambitious and innovative work and keep creating opportunities for the young people of Skye and Lochalsh to participate in dance we are always in need of sponsors and donations. If you or your company are interested in contributing in any way we’d love to hear from you.
